Kidney awareness month, observed every March encourages individuals to learn about kidney health and take proactive steps to protect these vital organs. Kidneys are the most important organs in our body responsible for filtering waste, balancing fluids and regulating blood pressure, yet many people do notthink about their kidney health until problems arise. If your kidneys are not functioning properly, toxins build up in your body, leading to serious health issues.
Despite their importance, kidney disease often develops unnoticed until it reaches an advanced stage which is why it is nicknamed as “the silent killer”.
Chronic Kidney Disease (CKD) is a growing public health concern, with diabetes and high blood pressure being the leading causes. Other risk factors such as obesity, unhealthy lifestyle, heart diseases and family history make early detection crucial. Common warning signs like fatigue, swelling in the legs, feet or face, changes in urination (more or less frequent, dark or foamy urine, blood in urine) and persistent high blood pressure often appear only when significant kidney damage has occurred.Simple screenings like blood and urine tests can help identify kidney problems before they progress.
The good news is that kidney disease is largely preventable. Staying hydrated, maintaining a balanced diet, managing blood sugar levels, reducing salt intake and regular exercise can all contribute to keep up your kidney health. Also, avoiding excessive use of pain killers, alcohol consumption and avoiding smoking can also help protect kidney function.
This kidney awareness month, let’s take a moment to assess your risk, schedule a kidney health check up and encourage others to do the same.
At Lourdes Hospital, we are dedicated to raising awareness and providing early detection services for kidney health. If you or your ones are at risk, don’t wait, schedule a kidney function test today.
